1 Pakse – Tad Lo arrival (-)

Arrival in Pakse by flight from Vientiane or Luang Prabang.
Welcome upon your arrival in Pakse and en route to the Bolovens Plateau.

This is a moderately mountainous region where coffee and/or tea plantations are located. It is here that we find one of the most famous coffees in the world, sometimes called the "Champagne of coffee".

This coffee is mainly cultivated on the Bolavens Plateau by approximately 20,000 families living in the fresh air of 250 villages. It was introduced by the French in the 1920s in Thatheng, but production was low. The boom truly began in recent years.

A stop at a plantation will provide you with various information about coffee production in the country.

Note: depending on the season and time of day, you may not be able to observe the entire coffee processing process.

The plateau is also home to ethnic minorities such as the Lovens who gave their name to the plateau.

Besides the Lovens, the plateau also hosts the Mon-Khmer minorities Alak & Katu.

The Katu are renowned for carving their coffins, which they keep under their houses. This is a meticulous work to behold. Among women, one can still see some with traditional facial tattoos, although this trend tends to disappear over time.

The Suay, who call themselves Kui among themselves, are recognized as excellent elephant trainers for forest work.

Note: it is not guaranteed to see elephants at work, and this depends heavily on the season, the time of day, and also the tasks of their mahout.

Indeed, many elephants, when not at work, live in semi-freedom in the surrounding forests.

Arrival in the afternoon at the Tad Lo waterfalls.

The Tad Lo waterfalls are characterized by 3 falls. The closest is Tad Hang near the bridge. Tad Lo is the second. But the most impressive is the third, Tad Suong, with a beautiful waterfall located 10km upstream.

Note: the water level may vary depending on previous rainfall. It is easy to walk around the waterfall region. Due to the humidity brought by the falls, the ground can be slippery.

2 Tadlo / walks and visits - Pakse / visits to Wat Phou – Don Khone (B,L)

After breakfast,
Meet at 08:00 and we will head towards Khong Island.

On the way, we will make a small detour to visit the Pha Suam waterfall and explore the villages of the Lao Teung ethnic groups.

We will continue the journey en route via the city of Pakse, crossing the Mekong by ferry to visit the fascinating pre-Angkorian ruin of Wat Phou, one of the most spectacular temples. Wat Phou is a Lao World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO in 2001. This magnificent Khmer archaeological site dates from the 5th century, predating the famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

We will continue our journey by car, then we will take the Don Khong ferry, the largest island in the Southern Mekong region known as the 4000 Islands, one of the most spectacular sites in Laos.

Lunch included and dinner at leisure. Overnight on Khong Island.

3 Don Khone / walks, excursions and visits – Khong Island – Pakse (B,L)

After breakfast,
Meet at 08:00 for departure by traditional boat to the 4000 Islands at the borders of Laos, towards the tranquil islands of Don Det and Don Khone.

Don Det and Don Khone are two islands with a very relaxed atmosphere, without vehicles, located on the border with the province of Stung Streng in Cambodia. Here, everything is truly calm and electricity is only supplied in the evening.

In the northern part of Don Det island, near the jetty, a "backpacker" spot has taken root, but the rest of the island as well as Don Khone island have managed to retain their own character, focused on the cultivation of coconut, kapok, and bamboo.

The islands played an important role in connecting Laos to Cambodia and South Vietnam during the French colonial era (19th century).

To bypass the waterfalls, a railway and a bridge were built, which gives a unique atmosphere to this place. The ideal spot to enjoy your stay.

Visit the Liphi waterfalls.

Impressive is the perfect word to describe these fantastic waterfalls that flow between Cambodia and Don Khone Island, right in the middle of the rocks.

Tad Somphamit waterfalls, locally called Lippi waterfalls, are sacred to local communities and mean "spirit trap" because they are believed to capture evil spirits.

Once your visits are complete, transfer to the village of Ban Nakhasan where your vehicle will be waiting for a transfer to the Khoneprapheng waterfalls, at the southern tip of the country near the Cambodian border, to admire the largest waterfalls in Laos.

The Khoneprapheng Falls are the highest and probably the most impressive in the country, and locals have set up wooden huts there from which the view is breathtaking and beautiful. In addition, above the falls, local populations have installed an ingenious bamboo system to be able to fish while respecting the spirits of the place.
