Cambodia is a bit of a hidden gem in Southeast Asia. While it's still a very popular tourist destination, it's not talked about as much as Thailand. With its spectacular temples, magnificent islands and beaches, and rich cultural heritage, Cambodia is a place not to be missed. Although the hustle and bustle of the big cities is one of the country's main attractions, my favorite places in Cambodia are actually the small towns and villages. From jungles to beaches, this country is full of amazing sites just waiting to be explored.

Best time to visit

The most popular time to travel to Cambodia is during the dry season, from November to March. During the dry season, temperatures usually range between 70 degrees Fahrenheit and 80 degrees Celsius, sometimes up to 90 degrees Celsius. April and May are the hottest and most humid months, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees.

The rainy season runs from May to October, and although the temperature still reaches 90 degrees, the rain cools it down a bit. During the rainy season, afternoon showers are routine but don't tend to disrupt daily life much. If you don't mind buying an umbrella, traveling during this period can be pleasant and much less crowded than the high season.

What to pack for traveling to Cambodia

No matter when you travel to Cambodia, it will be very hot. The tropical climate means high heat and humidity all year round. Despite this, evenings can remain cool, especially in the winter months. So it's a good idea to bring a jacket or a sweater. Ponchos are available in most places, but it's a good idea to bring a rain jacket if you're traveling during the rainy season. There's nothing worse than getting caught in an afternoon shower without cover!

Must-visit destinations in Cambodia

Phnom Penh

Once considered the "pearl of Asia", Phnom Penh fell victim to war and upheaval. But today, the city has come back to life with its intriguing markets, charming cafe culture, and delicious food scene.

Kampong Thom

Kompong Thom is the capital of Kampong Thom province in Cambodia. It is located roughly halfway between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, so most travelers will only rush through it during their transfer between these two main attractions.

Nevertheless, it is a pleasant and relaxed place, and a good starting point for exploring the countryside and the temples of Sambor Prei Kuk.

Angkor Archaeological Park (Siem Reap)

Angkor Archaeological Park is home to some of the world's most famous temples, including the majestic Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, and Bayon. Most visitors are surprised to learn that there are dozens of temple complexes that can be visited within the park, and they often underestimate the time needed to fully enjoy these historical sites. In addition, several magnificent temples must be explored outside Angkor Park, such as Beng Mealea, Banteay Srei, and the Roluos group.

Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. You can visit the lake in Siem Reap and explore the region's natural riches, ranging from unique ecosystems and wildlife to "floating" villages. While you can certainly explore the region yourself, it's easier to book an excursion to experience a small slice of lakeside village life without having to attempt to navigate yourself. The floating villages of Tonle Sap are a vibrant and colorful part of Khmer culture and can provide a much-needed respite from the chaos of the cities.

Battambang

The province of Battambang is located in the far west of Cambodia; it is bordered to the west by Thailand, to the south by the Cardamom Mountains, to the east by Tonle Sap Lake and Pursat, and to the north by Banteay Meanchey province. With a rich architectural heritage, an increasingly confident art scene offering a cradle for many Cambodian talents, and a magnificent surrounding countryside, Battambang is a tranquil respite from the boom and bustle of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Pursat

Pursat is a relatively small city located in western Cambodia. Even if its attractions do not stand out much from other provincial capitals, they constitute an excellent gateway to the Cardamom Mountains. Moreover, the region is ideal for travelers on Cambodia travel packages who are interested in eco-tourism. Kampong Luang and its floating villages located on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake, about 28 km from the city, are one of the most popular sites for residents of Pursat city to explore.

Sihanoukville

Thailand is often renowned for its idyllic islands, but did you know that Cambodia's beaches are just as beautiful? Head down to Sihanoukville, in the southwest of the country, and set off for some of the country's paradise islands. If you are a scuba diving enthusiast, a few diving sites across Cambodia are also worth exploring.

Pristine beaches and clear blue waters make for a perfect beach holiday, especially on the paradise island of Koh Rong. A word of warning for digital nomads, however: some of the islands are a bit primitive, and while you will have decent accommodation, you may struggle to find a Wi-Fi signal. But after all, who needs Wi-Fi when you can swim with glowing plankton at night?
