1. The big difference: who decides the pace?

This is often the first thing travelers don't realize until they're there. On a group tour, the bus leaves at 8:00 AM. It doesn't matter if you want to stay another hour in front of the Sapa rice fields, go buy tea at that market you just saw, or take your time at Thung Khe pass to photograph the morning light. The program is what it is.

On a private tour, your guide and driver are entirely at your disposal. You decide to leave later. You add a stop you hadn't planned. You remove a step that no longer inspires you. The tour adapts to you, not the other way around.
