More than just a means of protection against the sun and rain, the Vietnamese conical hat implies historical and cultural significance

In a tropical country with scorching sun and torrential rains like Vietnam, the conical hat proves very practical on the road as well as in the rice fields. It is like a mobile roof. It has always been linked to the life of the Vietnamese people, even today when all kinds of headwear are common. It is indispensable in traditional female costume, accompanying the áo dài tunic or the "bà ba" floating jacket. As such, it inspires many poems and paintings that live through time.
Vietnamese people have made many kinds of conical hats for different ages and social positions. Conical hats for women use latanier leaves, spathes, areca palm, and mộc threads taken from the forest as raw materials.
First, the latanier leaves must be processed. These green and wrinkled leaves must be spread under a heated iron plate to be ironed without being burned, their yellow color is bleached by exposing them to sulfur smoke which will protect them against mold.
