The Circuit Nord-Ouest is a 10-day journey through Vietnam's wildest landscapes, from the misty passes of Thung Khe to the historic plains of Dien Bien Phu, from the tea plateaus of Moc Chau to the terraced rice fields of Sapa. 1. Hanoi — Hoa Binh — Pu Bin

Valley · Hoa Binh Province · Black River

Pick-up at your hotel in Hanoi by your French-speaking guide and private driver. Departure for Hoa Binh (75 km, ~1h30). En route, landscapes of rice fields and first mountainous reliefs announcing the Nord-Ouest.

An essential stop: visit the Hoa Binh Dam — the largest dam in Vietnam, an impressive hydraulic structure on the Black River. Panoramic photos from the viewpoints. Lunch at a local restaurant in Hoa Binh — authentic Muong cuisine.

2. Pu Bin — Mai Chau — Mai Hich

Local breakfast. Drive to Mai Chau (50 km, ~1h15) in the lush Thai valley. Bike or walk through the rice fields and visit the White Thai villages of Pom Coong and Lac. Meet the weaving artisans — traditional weaving demonstration and textile shop.

3. Mai Hich — Col Thung Khe — Moc Chau

Breakfast at a local's home. Drive to Moc Chau plateau (130 km, ~3h30 with stops). First mandatory stop at Col de Thung Khe (White Rock) — extraordinary panorama of limestone valleys and mountains as far as the eye can see, unforgettable photos (30 min).

Continue towards Moc Chau plateau. Stop at a Shan Tuyet tea plantation — tea at 1,000 m altitude, on-site tasting. Lunch at a local restaurant in Moc Chau.

5. Son La — Tuan Giao — Dien Bien Phu

Departure for the main road to Dien Bien Phu (170 km, ~4h30 with stops) — one of the most spectacular roads in Vietnam. Stop 1: Thai village in Tuan Giao (80 km, ~1h30) — coffee and interaction with locals. Stop 2: Pa Thom Suspension Bridge — breathtaking view of the deep valley. Lunch en route at a local restaurant.

Arrival in the famous historical basin of Dien Bien Phu. First stroll in the central square. Visit the Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum — reconstruction of the 1954 battle, a moment of intense memory. Check-in at Muong Thanh Luxury Dien Bien ★★★★.

Arrival in Muong Lay, a floating town on the reservoir lake. Lunch by the water. Walk along the lake shores (30–45 min) — timeless atmosphere, fishing boats, changing light on the mountains.

Afternoon: road to Lai Chau (60 km, ~1h30). High mountain landscapes and isolated villages of the Lao and Lu ethnic groups, among the least known in Vietnam. Arrival in Lai Chau in the late afternoon — a modern city in the heart of the peaks.

8. Lai Chau — Sin Ho — Tram Ton Pass — Sapa

Corniche road · 1,900 m · Roof of Indochina

Route to Sapa via Sin Ho and Tram Ton Pass (135 km, ~3h30 with stops). First section to Sin Ho (60 km, ~1h30) — magnificent cornice road above the void. Stop at Sin Ho Market (Thursdays: authentic ethnic market, off the tourist circuits) or panoramic viewpoint at the pass.

Crossing Tram Ton Pass (1,900 m) — the highest point of the national road, passing above the clouds. Photo stop with a view of Fansipan (3,143 m), "Roof of Indochina" on a clear day. Arrival in Sapa. 9. Sapa — Ethnic Villages & Terraced Rice Fields

Black Hmong · Red Dao · National Heritage

Day of walks through Vietnam's most photographed landscapes.

Morning: hike to the Black Hmong village of Cat Cat — waterfalls, traditional houses, women in embroidered indigo costumes. Then drive to the Red Dao village of Ta Phin — medicinal herbal bath craftsmanship, colorful embroideries, warm welcome.

Afternoon: descent into Muong Hoa valley — Vietnam's most impressive terraced rice fields, classified as national heritage. Walk among the golden or green plots depending on the season. Shopping in Sapa's handicraft markets. Optional Fansipan cable car (~20 USD/person, not included). Farewell dinner: Vietnamese hotpot with mountain herb broth.

10. Sapa — Lao Cai — Hanoi

Last minute shopping · Recommended night train

Breakfast at the hotel. Free time in Sapa — last minute shopping, panoramic cafe, photographs. Drive to Lao Cai (38 km, ~1h).

Option A — Night train (recommended): departure from Lao Cai at 8:30 PM, arrival in Hanoi at 6:00 AM. Comfortable Lotus Train sleeper cabins; one of the iconic travel experiences. Included in the train option quote.

Option B — Direct road: Hanoi by road (~320 km, ~5h30) with a scenic break and lunch stop.

When to go for the Northwest Circuit?

The seasons of the Northwest are distinct — here is our summary to avoid mistakes.

? Our recommendation: September–November for Sapa's golden rice fields and perfect photographic light. March–May for Moc Chau's blooms. If you want the best compromise: late September, early October.
