The Mekong Delta: Vietnam's rice bowl and activity hub

After a journey of over 4300km, the Mekong River ends its voyage in southern Vietnam. It is in this region that the river forms a fertile and lush delta with unique landscapes. Here, one does not walk, one navigates. Boats are the main means of transport; you will observe a constant ballet of small vessels. They come and go, loaded with fruits and other goods as original as they are colorful. The Mekong Delta, also called the Delta of the 9 Dragons, consists of 12 provinces and the municipality of Can Tho: An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre, Ca Mau, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang, Tien Giang, Tra Vinh, and Vinh Long.

Must-see destinations in the Delta

Tan Lap Floating Village (Long An) 

Located about 100 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City center, Tan Lap Floating Village fascinates nature lovers with its vast cajeput forest. There is notably a 5km long path crossing the lush forest, ensuring a good immersion in nature.

Vinh Trang Pagoda (Tien Giang) 

The magnificent Buddhist gardens of Vietnam. Vinh Trang Pagoda is one of the most famous in the Delta and is located about three kilometers from My Tho city center. Feast your eyes on this exquisite temple and its surrounding flower gardens.

Cai Be Floating Market (Tien Giang) 

In the heart of the Mekong Delta's rice fields, you can visit the lively Cai Be floating river market. The riverside village is a major hub for farmers, wholesalers, and buyers who gather here in a raft of longtail boats. Agricultural products bought and sold at this market are distributed throughout the country.

Sadec (Dong Thap) 

For admirers of the writer Marguerite Duras and her works; Sadec is a must-see destination when visiting Vietnam. The house of Marguerite Duras's lover, Mandarin Huynh Thuy Le, Trung Vuong school, and the film sets including Nha Co Binh Thuy or Mr. Duong Minh Hien's Orchid House are among the essential places to visit.

Tram Chim National Park (Dong Thap) 

Tram Chim National Park has approximately 130 plant species, 130 freshwater fish species, and 132 waterbird species, including the sarus crane – one of the largest endangered waterbirds in the world.

Xeo Quyt Relic Area (Dong Thap) 

Covering an area of 50 hectares, Xeo Quyt was formerly a revolutionary military base during the country's resistance.

Fruit Orchards (Ben Tre) 

The famous orchards (Tien Long, Cai Mon, or Tam Phu) will certainly provide you with an exciting and unforgettable experience. Ben Tre wins the hearts of travelers thanks to its specialty fruit haven, where 41,000 hectares of orchards produce approximately 375,000 tons of fruit each year. There are many types of fresh fruits in the gardens for you to enjoy directly.

Candy Workshop (Ben Tre) 

As the homeland of coconuts, a trip to Ben Tre will never be complete without a visit to one of the coconut candy making workshops.

Cai Rang Floating Market (Can Tho) 

Floating markets are a must-see in the Mekong Delta. But to enjoy these unique markets, you have to be an early bird!

Chua Doi Pagoda (Soc Trang) 

This pagoda, nearly 400 years old, was named by locals because many bats have made their home there.

Tra Su Forest (Chau Doc, An Giang) 

Near Chau Doc is the Tra Su forest (30 km southwest). The forest is an old plantation that is now a wildlife reserve. It is full of birds and beautiful lotus flowers. It is a flooded mangrove forest that contrasts with the lush green plants in the park.

Sam Mountain (Chau Doc, An Giang) 

At the summit, a beautiful panorama of rice fields awaits you. If the weather is on your side, you might even catch a glimpse of Cambodia. Such a landscape is earned, and you'll have to climb this small mountain, but the ascent is worth it!

Tiger Island or Cu lao Ong Ho in Vietnamese (An Giang)

A small paradise, largely unknown to tourists. Must-do activities include visiting the workshops where the Chams make traditional textiles and incense sticks. But also, and above all, discovering the island's hidden treasures at your own pace.

U Minh Thuong National Park (Ca Mau) 

A huge swamp and mangrove forest in Ca Mau that you can explore by boat. Especially for bird nerds, this place is fantastic as there are over 187 species of birds.

Phu Quoc Island 

Phu Quoc is a good place if you just want to relax in your hammock, enjoy the sun, and do nothing.

Con Dao Archipelago 

One of Vietnam's most beautiful and least developed destinations. It is located off the southern coast of Vietnam, a 45-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh. The island group consists of mountainous islands, with wide forest arches and is a paradise for divers and nature lovers.
