Ko Tao or "Turtle Island" is an island in Thailand and part of the Chumphon Archipelago, on the west bank of the Gulf of Thailand. It covers an area of approximately 21 km2. Administratively, it is a sub-district (tambon) of the Ko Pha-ngan district (amphoe) of Surat Thani province.

Best time to visit Koh Tao

It seems that every month has its advantages for a vacation in Koh Tao, depending on your desires:

• The highest temperatures are recorded between March and May, but these months are also the most favorable for whale shark sightings.
• The high season continues with mild temperatures from June to early September, and a lively atmosphere and high attendance during the Christmas period, in January and February.

Practical tips:

Avoid November (monsoon) and June (windy, rough seas, and high prices). Instead, prefer July or August for better diving conditions. Remember to check the Full Moon Parties calendar, which means crowds on the island. For absolute calm, prefer The Sanctuary in Koh Phangan.

How to get to Koh Tao

The only way to get to Koh Tao is by ferry. Either from Surat Thani on the mainland, or from one of the two closest islands, Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.

Suggested itinerary: From Bangkok, fly directly to Koh Samui. It is the largest island in the Gulf of Thailand archipelago and a magnificent destination in itself. You are free to make a stopover there for a few days before taking the ferry to Koh Tao.

You can also opt for a combined bus/ferry package with Lomprayah, departing from Bangkok and heading to Koh Tao, or from Phuket and heading to Koh Tao.

Lomprayah staff will pick you up at your hotel, or you can board directly from the airport.

If your budget is limited, this solution is the most economical and the travel time is roughly the same as a domestic flight followed by a ferry, including airport waiting time.

Where to stay in Koh Tao

Koh Tao is small (you can cross it in 25 minutes!), but choosing your neighborhood is crucial. Do you want nightlife, absolute calm, or proximity to diving clubs? Here is our selection of the best accommodations by area and by budget.

1. The best neighborhoods (Where to sleep?)

• Sairee Beach (West): The heart of the action. Ideal for those who want everything within reach: restaurants, bars, and nightlife. This is where the widest offer is found.

• Shark Bay & Chalok Bay (South): Quieter, perfect for relaxation. Be aware that access to some beaches (like Shark Bay) may require passing through resorts.

• Tanote Bay (East): The choice for nature and silence lovers. Isolated, wild, and magnificent for snorkeling.

What to do in Koh Tao? Well, there's a lot!

It may be a small island, but you'll find all sorts of island activities. Relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, hiking, lounging by the pool... there's something for everyone.

Head to the beaches!

Of course, Koh Tao is full of beaches, like any island. So, make your choice and go explore!

Sairee Beach

Sairee Beach is the island's main beach, close to most resorts and bungalows, and lined with restaurants and shops. A long beach located in the bay, it is on the same side of the island as the ferry port.

You'll find small shops, many restaurants, bungalows, beachfront hotels, and equipment rental stands. It's also a great place to watch the sunset and see the sun disappear over the horizon, dotted with longtail boats.

Tanote Bay

Less than 20 minutes by scooter from the center of the island.

At Tanote Bay, you can snorkel, relax in a hammock at the Poseidon Resort bar, and even jump off rocks in the middle of the bay.

Among the locals' favorite beaches are Hin Wong, Mango Bay, Shark Bay, Freedom Beach, and the small beach near the Siam Cookie Bungalows (yes, that's their name).

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling: The Must-Do in Koh Tao

Even if you're not a diver, you can still enjoy Koh Tao's crystal-clear waters and exceptional underwater world.

For Beginners

This is the #1 reason to come here: Koh Tao is one of the cheapest and most accessible places in the world to get your diving certification (PADI or SSI). The conditions here are perfect for beginners: calm, warm, and shallow water, like a giant aquarium. If you've never dived, now is the time to try your Open Water.

For Professional Divers

Already certified? Don't stick to the basic sites. Be sure to ask dive centers about their trips to Chumphon Pinnacle and the legendary Sail Rock. These are, without a doubt, the best spots in the region to observe pelagic fauna.

For Snorkeling

No need for tanks to be amazed. Boat excursions (snorkeling tours) generally go around the island with 4 or 5 strategic stops.

• Japanese Garden: Ideal for admiring corals.

• Shark Bay: The must-see spot to swim with turtles and, with a bit of luck, blacktip reef sharks (harmless).

• The Holy Grail: If luck smiles upon you during big sea outings, you might even encounter the majestic whale shark.

Go hiking!

Koh Tao is full of magnificent viewpoints and, if you've had your fill of water activities, hiking is an excellent alternative.

To combine the two, head to Nangyuan island, off the coast of Koh Tao. There you can snorkel, sunbathe, and even climb the hill for breathtaking views of this charming little bay.

Many boats and excursions will take you there. Remember to leave early to avoid the crowds or, at least, to reserve a sun lounger on the sandbar that connects the two parts of Koh Nangyuan.

Practical tips for your stay in Koh Tao

• Immigration & Visa: Good news, Koh Tao now has its own immigration office. You can therefore extend your tourist visa directly on the island without having to rush to Samui or the mainland.

• Money: ATMs are numerous (fixed fees of ~220 bahts/withdrawal). Note that card payments often incur a surcharge of 3 to 5%.

  • Tip: For large expenses (accommodation, diving courses), prefer transfers via Wise to save on exchange fees.

• Laundry: Expect to pay between 30 and 50 bahts per kilo. Simple rule: the further you are from the beach, the cheaper it is. The "Express" option costs around 80 bahts/kg.

• Health: The clinics in Sairee or Mae Haad are sufficient for minor care. For serious emergencies, it is better to go to the hospital in Koh Samui.

  • Note for divers: The island is equipped with a decompression chamber in case of an accident.

• Shopping: No large shopping centers here (go to Samui for that). You will find the essentials in 7-Eleven stores, local fruit stands, or shops on Walking Street in Sairee.
