Bordering Laos and southern China (Yunnan), the great Northwest of Vietnam is one of the most mountainous and remote regions of the country. Long inaccessible, it is now open to tourism. Getting around is not as easy as in the plains, but what an unforgettable journey!

Sapa and Bac Ha remain the two essential points of this off-the-beaten-path journey. Here is a majestic natural setting where some mountains rise to over 3,000 m (Fansipan mountain, 3,143 m, is the highest point in Vietnam). The surrounding valleys seem to have been carved out with great saber strokes in a rugged terrain. The steep and sometimes dizzying slopes have been sculpted by numerous ethnic minorities.

These ingenious inhabitants have built over time sumptuous terraced rice fields (like in Bali or the Philippines). They give the landscapes grandeur and beauty. It is in May that the rice fields are the greenest, while from November to April they take on yellowish, sometimes tawny colors. Further south, very different from Sapa and Bac Ha, the cities of Dien Bien Phu and Son La remain important historical sites of the Indochina War.
